Renowned film director Shyam Benegal Dies at 90

Famous director Shyam Benegal made a mark in Indian cinema with his unique films. The stories in his films raised real issues of the society and through each film, he tried to convey a strong message. Shyam Benegal, who gave many memorable films, passed away today, 23 December 2024. At the age of 90, he took his last breath at 6:30 pm and said goodbye to this world. 

Special relationship with Guru Dutt 

Shyam Benegal was suffering from kidney related problems for a long time. However, despite his illness, he never shied away from work and constantly worked on new projects. Many legendary actors like Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil and Girish Karnad made their mark with Shyam Benegal’s films. Born on 14 December 1934 in Hyderabad, Shyam Benegal was the cousin of famous actor and filmmaker Guru Dutt. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1976 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991. In 2005, he was also honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award, the highest award in Indian cinema. 

Film journey of Shyam Benegal 

Shyam Benegal started his career with the film Ankur, which starred Anant Nag and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles. Audiences liked the film very much. After this, his film Nishant came, which took his career to the heights. The film received critical acclaim in 1975 and was nominated for the Palme d’Or at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival. Other notable films of Shyam Benegal include Manthan, Bhumika, Market Place, Junoon, Zubeidaa, The Making of Mahatma, and Sardari Begum. The film starred Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi, Girish Karnad, Amrish Puri and Smita Patil in pivotal roles.

Celebrating the 90th Birthday 

Recently, Shyam Benegal celebrated his 90th birthday. Many celebrities from the film industry were present at the event. Shabana Azmi had shared a picture of the celebration on her Instagram, in which Shyam Benegal was seen smiling while sitting on a chair. Naseeruddin Shah was standing behind him. “On Shyam Benegal’s 90th birthday, with my co-star and favourite Naseeruddin Shah. Why aren’t we being cast together? ” 

Shyam Benegal’s films and his contribution to the world of cinema will always be remembered. His demise is a great loss to Indian cinema.
