Helen Richardson mononymously also known as Helen for her dancing skills in Bollywood. Helen has appeared in over 1000 movies as a supporting actress, cabaret dancer, or in a guest appearance. She has been a skilled dancer all her career and has won two FilmFare Awards and a Padma Shri Award from the Government Of India. She is a self-made woman who conquered the world with hard work and willpower.

Early-life of Helen Richardson Khan

Helen is a Burmese Christian who had to fly away from her homeland to India to save themselves from the Japanese attacks. The group of Burmese people took on their journey on foot. It took months to reach India, meanwhile, many of her group mates fell ill or died of starvation. Helen with her mothers and brothers left no option for survival. In an account, Helen says after they reach Dibrugarh, Assam the group was slashed into half. Some died or fell ill on the way, her mother suffered a miscarriage and Helen lost her brother out of starvation. After they entered India they met a British group who helped them with food and health care treatment. After settling in India Helen’s mother joined as a nurse. Helen dropped out of school to provide for her brothers. Meanwhile, her family friend and actress Cuckoo offered her some dance roles in the Bollywood films where she could get some money. 

Her first break in the Bollywood film was in the movie Howrah Bridge where she performed as the lead dancer in the song “Chin Chin Chu”. After this, she got overflowing offers for cabaret dancers and even for supporting roles throughout the 1960s and 1970s. In most of the movies, her role was limited to a street singer or cabaret dancer who was later killed in the movie. Although, her passion for work led her to the nomination for the Film Fare Award for Best Supporting Actress for the role of Kitty Kelly in the movie Gumnaam.

Helen’s Personal Life

Helen was first married to film director Prem Narayan Arora in 1957, though their marriage lasted for 17 years when Helen decided to divorce him in 1974. Later she married Salim Khan who was married to Salma Khan with four children. Helen was immediately welcomed to the Khan’s family and the children of Khan’s family had a close bond with Helen. Helen is often seen with Salim and Salma Khan on several Award shows and events. Helen also has an adopted daughter Arpita Khan.

Helen’s life is full of ups and downs but it teaches us how someone can achieve everything even from scratch. Helen had to leave her home, she witnessed her mother’s miscarriage, and her brother’s death and suffered starvation. But her will did not die until she could provide for her family.
