Bhagat Singh was an Indian revolutionary freedom fighter who was hanged to death by British colonizers at the age of 23. Fondly known as ‘Shaheed (martyr) Bhagat Singh’, he is considered a national hero of India’s freedom struggle against colonial rule.
Life Insights of Bhagat Singh
Bhagat Singh was born in a Sikh family in Banga village of Faisalabad district (previously called Lyallpur), now in Pakistan’s Punjab province, on 27 September 1907. As his family was deeply inspired by nationalism, he too became actively involved in the country’s freedom movements. He quit education at the age of thirteen and got admitted to the National College in Lahore, where he studied European revolutionary movements. Eventually, Bhagat Singh lost his life at the age of 23. Such inspirational personalities deserve to be heard, and hence many filmmakers showed interest in his life story and delivered movies.

1. Shaheed-e-azad Bhagat Singh
This movie was released way back in 1954 on 1st January. The film, directed by Jagdish Gautam, featured Prem Abeed as Bhagat Singh and was followed by Smriti Biswas as the female lead, Ashita Mazumdar in a supporting role, and Jagdish Sethi in a key role as some of the main cast members.
2. The Legend of Bhagat Singh
This movie was released on June 7, 2002, and directed by Rajkumar Santoshi. It featured Ajay Devgan as Bhagat Singh, who nails the character in the film. It also featured Sushant Singh as Sukhdev Thapar, Raj Babbar as Kishan Singh (Bhagat Singh’s father), Farida Jalal as Vidyavati (Bhagat Singh’s mother), Amrita Rao as Mannewali (Bhagat Singh’s fiancée), Akhilendra Mishra as Chandrashekhar Azad, Bharat Sharma as Mahatma Gandhi, and a few others.
3. 1931: Shaheed
This movie was also released on June 7, 2002, along with ‘The Legend of Bhagat Singh’. It is directed by Guddu Dhanoa. It featured Bobby Deol as Bhagat Singh and Sunny Deol as Chandrashekhar Azad. The film also had Amrita Singh as Vidyavati (Bhagat Singh’s mother), Suresh Oberoi as Kishan Singh (Bhagat Singh’s father), Rahul Dev as Rajguru, Aishwarya Rai (special appearance) as Mannewali (Bhagat Singh’s fiancée), Shakti Kapoor as Jaigopal, and Divya Dutta as Durga Bhabhi.
4. Shaheed-E-Azam
This movie was the third movie on Bhagat Singh to be released in 2002. Sukumar Nair was the director of the film. Sonu Sood as Bhagat Singh looked impressive. It also featured Manoj Jha as Chandrashekhar Azad, Rajesh Sharma as Rajguru, Dev Gill as Sukhdev, Nirmal Pandey as Advocate Asaf Ali, and Juhi Parmar in a supporting role.
5. Rang De Basanti
This movie was released on January 26, 2006. Aamir Khan as Daljit “DJ” / Chandrashekhar Azad, Siddharth as Karan Singhania / Bhagat Singh, Atul Kulkarni as Laxman Pandey / Ram Prasad Bismil, Kunal Kapoor as Aslam Khan / Ashfaqulla Khan, Sharman Joshi as Sukhi Ram / Rajguru, Soha Ali Khan as Sonia / Durga Bhabhi. Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra’s film was a huge success, both critically and commercially, and is known for its powerful message, blending the historical legacy of freedom fighters with the present-day activism of youth.
