Laapataa Ladies qualifies for the Oscars 2025 as an official entry from India. A satire on patriarchy was chosen from 29 different films suggested to the committee. The Film Federation of India declared this on Monday.
As per media reports, many Indian films were in the running for recognition. Laapataa Ladies was chosen from a list of 29 films, including Bollywood’s hit Animal, Malayalam National Award winner Aattam, and Cannes winner All We Imagine As Light. The selection committee of 13 members, which was led by Assamese director Jahnu Barua, eventually settled on Lapataa Ladies. The movie was also considered in the top international film category at the Academy Awards. Kiran Rao expressed her wish to hit the Oscars. She said that her dream would be fulfilled if it happened, so she showed optimism that it had been considered.
Laapataa Ladies was released in March 2024 and was produced by Aamir Khan, Rao, and Jyoti Deshpande. It features Nitanshi Goel, Pratibha Ranta, Sparsh Shrivastava, Ravi Kishan, along with Chhaya Kadam. It’s a story about a couple from rural India in 2001 who accidentally get their wives swapped on a train ride. The story receives universal praise from the critics and fans around the world. The film was released in theaters and is now streaming on Netflix. The response from the OTT audiences is nothing different from the theater times.
Along with Laapataa Ladies, a few other Hindi films were also on the list for an Oscar entry from India, including Ajay Devgn’s Maidaan, Kartik Aaryan’s Chandu Champion, Article 370, and a few others.
