Sunny Deol has officially announced the much-anticipated sequel to the 1997 hit war drama, “Border.” One of India’s most well-known war movies is the original, which J.P. Dutta directed. On Thursday, Sunny Deol took to Instagram to share an announcement video, much to the delight of his fans. Anurag Singh, who is well-known for his work on “Kesari” and “Jatt & Juliet,” will direct the sequel, “Border 2.”
The announcement video features a voiceover by Sunny Deol, where he says, “27 saal pehle ek fauji ne vada kiya tha ki vo vapas aayega. Ussi vaade ko poora karne, Hindustan ki mitti ko apna salaam kehne, aa raha hai. 27 years ago, a soldier made a promise that he would return. To fulfill that promise and to salute the soil of India, he is returning.” Roopkumar Rathod and Sonu Nigam’s iconic song “Sandese Aate Hain” plays in the background as the video comes to a close.
Sunny Deol provided additional information about the movie in his Instagram post, revealing that Bhushan Kumar, Krishan Kumar, JP Dutta, and Nidhi Dutta will produce it and that Anurag Singh will serve as the director. The announcement has generated considerable excitement among fans, with notable personalities like designer Manish Malhotra and actors Suniel Shetty and Esha Deol expressing their enthusiasm in the comments.
Sunny Deol revealed on “The Ranveer Show” that “Border 2” was initially planned to start in 2015 but was shelved due to concerns about the performance of his then-recent releases at the box office. However, the project is now back on track and promises to be India’s biggest war film.
The original “Border,” released on June 13, 1997, was based on the Battle of Longewala during the India-Pakistan War of 1971. It starred an ensemble cast including Suniel Shetty, Jackie Shroff, Akshaye Khanna, Sudesh Berry, and Puneet Issar, along with supporting roles by Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Tabu, Raakhee, Pooja Bhatt, and Sharbani Mukherjee. Javed Akhtar and Anu Malik’s memorable soundtrack, which included songs like “Sandese Aate Hain,” “Ae Jaate Hue Lamhon,” and “Mere Dushman, Mere Bhai,” significantly increased the film’s popularity.
In the new announcement, Sunny Deol emphasizes that “Border 2” will uphold the legacy of its predecessor. The film’s production team, which includes Bhushan Kumar of T-Series and the original director JP Dutta, along with his daughter Nidhi Dutta, is dedicated to creating a war film that resonates with the same impact as the original.
Reports indicate that preparations for “Border 2” are nearly complete, with filming set to begin in October. An insider revealed to Pinkvilla that the team aims to release the film on Republic Day, January 26, 2026, aligning with the holiday to celebrate the bravery of the Indian Armed Forces.
Sunny Deol’s recent success with “Gadar 2,” where he reprised his role as Tara Singh, has reignited interest in his work. “Gadar 2” became a blockbuster, crossing more than ₹450 crore at the Indian box office.
In conclusion, “Border 2” is poised to be a landmark film, bringing back the beloved character of Fauji after 27 years. With a talented director like Anurag Singh and a dedicated production team, fans can look forward to another epic portrayal of India’s wartime bravery.
