With the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) sending a legal notice to the filmmakers, Kangana Ranaut’s upcoming film Emergency has become involved in controversy.
The SGPC’s contention that the film distorts Sikh history, especially with regard to the way historical events and figures are portrayed in the Sikh community, helps to explain the problem. Rising public indignation, the SGPC requests a written apology to the Sikh community and the elimination of offensive portions from the film’s teaser.
SGPC’s Perspective on Emergency
Managing historical Gurdwaras, the SGPC firmly opposed Emergency after spotting scenes in the trailer they felt misrepresented the Sikh community. Partap Singh, SGPC secretary, said that the scenes in issue depict Sikhs as terrorists and separatists—more so, he pointed out a representation of Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. According to the SGPC, such a portrayal damages the Sikh image in addition to being historically erroneous. They want these parts taken out of the movie and a public apology from Kangana Ranaut and other creators.
Public Interest Litigation Filed
Apart from the SGPC’s alert, a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) was submitted with the Punjab and Haryana High Court. Arguing that the video fosters animosity toward Sikhs and distorts historical facts, the PIL requests the certificate awarded to Emergency for public release revoked. The petitioners also note that the film can cause social unrest in Punjab, hence aggravating religious and cultural conflicts. They want legal action against Kangana Ranaut and the producers as well as cancellation of the film’s certification by the Central Board of Film Certification.
Political and Legal Responses
With different Sikh leaders and groups expressing their worries, the debate has attracted major political attention. Both the SGPC and the highest temporal seat of the Sikhs, the Akal Takht, have sought an instantaneous ban on the movie. The SGPC has also urged the Chairperson of the CBFC and the Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting to act against Emergency in letters.
Legal and public pressure on Kangana Ranaut and the Emergency producers mounts as the debate rumbles on. Based on the life of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, the movie was already under conversation for its political theme. The movie’s release could be postponed or changed, nevertheless, depending on the result of judicial procedures given the additional charges of anti-Sikh attitudes.
The circumstances emphasize the need of showing historical events and personalities with sensitivity, especially those related to religious groups.
