Many Bollywood films run into controversy even before hitting the box office. The same happened with the recently released film Emergency and the list of such films is long. By the way, now another film has been mired in controversy before its release. The film, starring Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna, is scheduled to release on February 14. The film’s trailer was released recently and was very well received. However, now the controversy has started over some of the sequences shown in the trailer of the film. Especially, people have expressed their displeasure over Vicky Kaushal’s dance moves.
Now the controversy took a new turn when Maharana Pratap’s descendant and former Rajya Sabha MP Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati gave his reaction. “It is very important to verify the historical facts of the film. He demanded that the film be shown to historians before its release so that it can be presented in a correct and authentic manner. The film is based on the life of Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj.
Vicky Kaushal plays the role of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj
The film stars Vicky Kaushal as Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and Rashmika Mandanna as his wife Maharani Yesubai. Some organizations and history lovers have objected to the dance scene shown in the trailer.
Controversy over dance moves
The trailer features a scene in which Vicky Kaushal and Rashmika Mandanna are seen dancing to a traditional musical instrument called ‘Lezim’. It is a symbol of the cultural heritage of Maharashtra. Regarding this scene, people have said that it is not in accordance with the dignity of Sambhaji Maharaj.
Sambhajiraje Chhatrapati said, “It is very commendable that the film depicts the life and heroic reign of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. Director Laxman Utekar and his team contacted me and showed me the trailer of the film. I told him that I would like to see the film before its release. And I offered to help him.”
He further added that it is important to ensure that this important story is presented in an authentic manner to audiences across the world. He suggested that the film should be reviewed by historians and experts to remove any historical inaccuracies in it. OS
Sambhajiraje also said that the film is an important part of the legacy of the Maratha Empire and Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj. In such a situation, it is necessary to discuss whether it is right to take such cinematic liberties. He appealed to the filmmakers to improve the film by taking advice from historians and experts. However, the filmmakers have not yet made any formal statement on the subject or discussed it with historians.
Protests in Pune
The controversy took a turn for the worse when some Maratha outfits held a protest at the historic Lal Mahal in Pune. The protesters objected to a particular scene in the film.
“We protest that the film shows Sambhaji Maharaj and Rani Yesubai dancing after the coronation. This scene is in contrast to his royal persona and Maratha culture. The filmmakers should get the film reviewed by historians before releasing it and present it to the audience only after getting their approval.’
Respect Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj
The main reason for the questions being raised about the film is that the Maratha community is very sensitive about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj and his legacy. Maharaj’s life is a symbol of valour and sacrifice. In such a situation, special care should be taken of historical facts and their dignity while showing their story on screen.

The responsibility of the filmmakers
This is not the first time that a historical film has courted controversy. Films based on historical themes often face such challenges. In such a situation, the responsibility of the filmmakers increases that they respect the historical facts and present the story in the right perspective.
There is no end to the controversy surrounding the film ‘Chhava’. It will now be interesting to see what steps the filmmakers take to resolve the matter and whether changes will be made to the film after a review by historians. The life of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj is an inspiration, and bringing his story to the big screen is a bold step in itself. But it is equally important that it should be presented in an authentic manner so that the coming generations can understand the greatness of Maratha history properly.
