Shah Rukh Khan revealed that he went through anxiety during the film ‘Devdas’

The Bollywood actor Shah Rukh Khan, born on November 2, 1965, also known by the initials SRK, is an Indian actor and film producer who works in Hindi cinema. He is popular in the media as the “Baadshah of Bollywood” and “King Khan. The actor worked in more than 100 films and received many honors, including 14 Filmfare awards too. He has been awarded the Padma Shri by the Government of India, as well as the Order of Arts and Letters and Legion of Honor by the Government of France. SRK has a significant following in Asia and the Indian diaspora worldwide.

SRK came down to Mumbai first for the shooting of a TV series with a lot of nervousness as it was obvious. Meanwhile, he also started auditioning for some roles in Hindi movies in 1990 after the death of his mother (his father died a decade earlier in 1980). SRK’s parents died early, and that had shaken him immensely. SRK eventually chose to pursue a full-time acting career and relocate to Mumbai to start afresh. He believed that he would act and thereby also overcome the loss of his parents, as there was nothing for him to go back to.

SRK went through anxiety during Devdas

Recently, after receiving the Pardo alla Carriera Ascona-Locarno Tourism award at the 77th Locarno Film Festival, he sat down for a conversation organized by the event’s producers. During the interview, he shared that he accepted the titular role in director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Devdas (2002), despite receiving advice against it from many veterans, simply because he believed his mother, Lateef Fatima, would have liked it. “For some reason, I always felt if I made very big films, my mom and dad could see them from heaven. It’s a childish thought, but I still think my mom’s a star. I even know the star she is,” he said. “I just felt that if I made Devdas, she would like it and appreciate it. I didn’t think I could play the character because some of the greatest artists in our country, like Dilip Kumar, KL Saigal, and Uttam Kumar, had played it flawlessly earlier. I don’t think mine (his portrayal) is so brilliant or good.

Despite a lot of senior actors telling me not to do it, I just wanted to do it,” he added, while also lauding Bhansali. Shah Rukh also admitted that he was quite anxious while filming Devdas, even turning to alcohol while playing the character. When asked if it helped, Shah Rukh replied with his trademark humor, “Well, I got the Best Actor award.” He added, “It might have helped, but I started drinking after the film, and that’s one downside to it.”
