With its depiction of caste-based human struggle, Nikkhil Advani’s “Vedaa” boldly enters the field of socially aware film. The movie centers on Vedaa (Sharvari), a Dalit girl hoping to be a boxer, who runs strong resistance from her family and community. Her path crosses that of Major Abhimanyu (John Abraham), whose entrance in her hometown marks change and optimism. As Vedaa, Sharvari excels, giving a raw and captivating performance that perfectly embodies the core of her character’s struggle and reliability. Renowned for his action roles, John Abraham offers to Major Abhimanyu a combination of physical strength and ferocity. The ferocious village head, Abhishek Banerjee, gives the antagonist in the movie complexity. A harsh storyline that, despite some cliches, really hooks the viewers to compliment the performers.

“Vedaa” addresses relevant societal concerns, especially the difficulties the Dalit people suffer. But sometimes the film’s societal critique is subordinated to its action scenes.
