Mukesh Khanna Criticizes ‘Kalki 2898 AD,’ Demands Government Action

Prominent performer Mukesh Khanna, best recognized for his legendary parts as Bhishma and Shaktiman in BR Chopra’s television series “Mahabharat,” has voiced his reservations over the movie “Kalki 2898 AD.” Prabhas, Deepika Padukone, Amitabh Bachchan, and Kamal Haasan starred in the Nag Ashwin-directed film, which was highly acclaimed for its breathtaking visuals and outstanding performances. It was a huge hit at the box office. Khanna, however, expressed his dissatisfaction of the movie’s treatment of Mahabharata aspects on his YouTube account.

Khanna complimented the performances, especially Amitabh Bachchan’s, and acknowledged the film’s high caliber, drawing comparisons between its graphics and Hollywood productions like “Avatar.” He did, however, take issue with the filmmakers’ major modifications to the Mahabharata. In his film, Khanna drew attention to errors, such as the picture of Lord Krishna removing the jewel from Ashwathama’s forehead and giving him the order to be his future savior. Khanna explained that, in accordance with the Mahabharata, Draupadi—not Krishna—was the one who gave the order to remove Ashwatthama’s jewel.

Khanna expressed his disgust, asking how the filmmakers could think they knew more than the ancient philosopher Vyas muni, who wrote the Mahabharata. He stressed that these narrative liberties are unacceptable and demonstrate a lack of regard for customary storytelling. “The liberties you have taken are inexcusable,” said Khanna. Though we believe South Korean filmmakers to be more respectful of our customs, what has happened recently?”

Khanna insisted that a committee be established by the government to supervise movies that tackle mythical subjects like the Gita and the Ramayana. He proposed giving this committee the power to oversee and edit the screenplays in order to guarantee correctness and adherence to established narratives.

“Kalki 2898 AD,” which stars Prabhas as Kashi’s Bhairava and Deepika as SUM-80, a pregnant test subject, combines science fiction and mythology themes. Indian mythology’s Ashwatthama is portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan. Since its June 27 release, the film has gotten positive reviews and made over ₹700 crore globally, in spite of Khanna’s complaints.

Khanna’s comments have spurred debates about the artistic license that filmmakers take when reimagining myths, emphasizing the need to strike a balance between cultural sensitivity and artistic interpretation. His demand for governmental control raises the possibility that maintaining the integrity of conventional storylines in contemporary film requires a methodical strategy.
